MLB will test a robot umpire system at the next All-Star Game where teams can challenge rulings using an automated ball-strike system.
Human umpires will still make the initial calls, but teams will have two opportunities to challenge a call using the ABS system as backup.
The ABS challenge system allows pitchers, catchers, or hitters to request a challenge immediately after a pitch by tapping their hat or helmet for the umpire to review.
MLB sees the ABS challenge system as a compromise between tradition and technology, adding a strategic element to the game, and potential implementation in regular baseball seasons.
