The Ministry of Transport (MoT) will develop a database for drivers of express buses and tour buses to enhance public land transportation safety.
The database will include drivers' records and will be developed by the land public transport agency (APAD).
This system will allow bus companies to assess driver eligibility and backgrounds before hiring them.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted the need for such a database following a bus crash in Gerik that resulted in the death of 15 UPSI students and injuries to 33 others.
Loke mentioned the current lack of a comprehensive database covering drivers' previous records and emphasized the importance of companies having references for drivers they hire.
Concern was raised about drivers with integrity issues being able to move between companies without consequences.
Loke also announced that speed limiters will be made mandatory for heavy vehicles in Malaysia to improve road safety.
The policy on speed limiters is under review to prevent loopholes or manipulation once implemented.
The initiative aims to address safety concerns and ensure accountability in the public transportation sector.
The development of the database and the implementation of speed limiters are part of broader efforts to enhance transportation regulations and safety measures.
The Ministry's actions come in response to recent incidents and aim to prevent future accidents through improved driver monitoring and vehicle safety measures.
The transport ministry's focus on database development and speed limiter enforcement reflects a commitment to improving public land transportation standards.
