Motorists in small vehicles, especially motorcyclists, are advised to avoid using the East-West Highway at night due to the risk of encountering wild animals, particularly elephants.
Wildlife and national parks department (Perhilitan) Perak director Yusoff Shariff highlighted that herds of elephants in the area are active at night as they search for food, increasing the possibility of encounters with road users.
Most reported elephant attacks occur from dusk until early morning when the herds are usually roaming for food, making encounters unavoidable for road users during that time.
Recent incidents, including one where an elephant damaged a vehicle on the highway, emphasize the importance of caution on the East-West Highway, particularly in areas like KM11 where encounters with wildlife, especially elephants, are likely.
