MrBeast and Amazon Prime's Beast Games has debuted with the first two episodes and a reportedly $100mn deal, featuring Squid Game inspired gameplay with 1000 players competing for a $5mn prize.
However, the show despite the hype, seems flat, obnoxious, and entirely derivative, with nothing special that makes it feel significant.
Jimmy Donaldson, MrBeast is good at what he does, making sure that his videos work the algorithm like a savant which includes entertaining unchallenging content and relentless editing.
MrBeast's videos have usually featured competitive events, which seems to be the cornerstone of the game show as well, but this time the formula is not working.
Many of the dilemmas presented in the game show, especially those that whittle down the numbers, can be compelling yet, speaking of this substantial expense, the game show felt cheap as it was less high in quality and production.
One of the major issues with the show is that it lacked MrBeast and had a low-scale presentation as the whole show felt like any other reality TV competition with low-impact personalities.
As Amazon launched the show, MrBeast's YouTube Channel uploaded a 24-minute video that showed his means of reducing the number of players to create a gateway for the YouTube audience,
While the show may have an initial audience draw due to his name, it seems it will fail to keep its appeal with its watered-down and flattened format.
Beast Games feels small, unimportant and uneventful compared to the hype around its debut, lacking the impact, and importance that it should have had.
So, it is fine, but it could have been so much better.
