My 3 years at Tesla were the best and worst of my life

  • Amanda Manley, a former employee at Tesla, describes her experience working for the company. She joined Tesla in 2017, excited to work for a company with such momentum behind it.
  • Manley worked as a Department of Motor Vehicle operations specialist for Tesla, where she helped build Tesla's first official dealership in Indiana and worked on its title and registration processes from scratch.
  • Manley worked exceptionally hard, often working 12 to 16-hour days and sacrificing family time. Her family life suffered from the long hours, and it wasn't until she had a son in 2020 that she realized something needed to change.
  • Manley worked for Tesla for three and a half years and admits that it was the best and worst experience of her working life. She enjoyed the high-energy, ambitious environment of her team but ultimately sacrificed too much of her personal life.
  • Manley recalls the company's workload demands in Q4, which were oppressive, and when she returned from maternity leave and was hit with the same workload and expectations, she realized that something had to give.
  • Manley reached out to a former manager, who told her of a company looking for an auditor. She applied for the job and landed it, leaving Tesla in 2021.
  • Manley is now working as a remote project manager and enjoying a life that is more balanced. She is still a true believer in Tesla and its mission, but she is aware of the damage it inflicted on her and her family.
  • Tesla did not respond when Business Insider reached out for comment. If you worked at Tesla and would like to share your experience, you could email Tess Martinelli at [email protected].
