A 46-year-old woman from Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra was cheated of Rs 49.59 lakh by fraudsters impersonating as a customs officer and a UK friend.
The fraud occurred between June and August 2024 but was reported when the victim filed a complaint at the Rabale police station.
The victim was promised an expensive gift parcel from abroad by the fraudsters, who then demanded multiple payments under false pretenses.
The case has been transferred to the cyber cell for further investigation as the accused used fake identities, and the police urge caution in social media interactions involving gift offers and monetary transactions.
