The Education Department will start charging interest on student debt for around 7.7 million borrowers who have been in limbo after a repayment plan by President Biden was blocked in court.
Interest charges for those in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) program will begin on Aug. 1, although loan payments do not need to resume yet.
Affected borrowers will be encouraged to switch to other repayment plans offered by the Trump administration to address the situation.
The SAVE program, allowing low-income borrowers to make zero-dollar monthly payments, faced opposition and was blocked in court, leading to the interest payment resumption for borrowers.
