The Albanese Government in Australia has implemented a new rule that requires electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to be louder in order to reduce pedestrian fatalities.
The Australian Design Rule (ADR) mandates the installation of an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) in all new electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles launched after November 1, 2025.
The AVAS emits a noise at low speeds to alert pedestrians, making it easier for them to notice the vehicles in car parks or other areas.
The rule is expected to prevent fatalities, serious injuries, and minor injuries and save the Australian community an estimated $208 million by 2060.
