A study from Graz University of Technology in Austria suggests that front-facing brake lights (FBLs) could reduce intersection collisions by up to 17 percent and lessen the severity of injuries in a quarter of crashes.
Front-facing brake lights would allow other drivers to see braking activities more easily from front and side angles, potentially improving reaction times and reducing accidents.
The study found that almost a fifth of crashes could have been avoided with front brake lights, and in 25.5 percent of crashes, the lights could reduce the speed of impact and severity of injuries.
Smaller green lights on the front and sides of vehicles were shown to be effective, offering a less visually impactful and cheaper alternative for improved safety.
