Nissan considering closing factories in Japan, Mexico, South Africa and Argentina – report

  • Nissan is considering closing factories in Japan, Mexico, South Africa, and Argentina as part of its turnaround plan.
  • Two factories in Japan, Oppama and Shonan, are under consideration for closure. Oppama produces the Note and Leaf with 3900 employees, while Shonan produces commercial vehicles with 1200 employees.
  • Nissan plans to consolidate manufacturing facilities in Mexico, close plants in South Africa and Argentina, and remove the factory in India from its books. The company is aiming to close seven factories by March 2028.
  • In addition to closing factories, Nissan intends to cut 20,000 jobs by 2028, seek efficiencies in R&D, and temporarily pause development of models after March 2027.
