The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will be trialing a new drone-in-a-box program in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season.
The program aims to improve emergency response in the aftermath of storms by having drones stationed at key locations that can be remotely activated for quicker assessment and aid delivery.
By using drones, emergency teams can map out the safest routes, locate trapped individuals, identify hazards such as downed powerlines, and deliver emergency supplies to affected areas.
The NCDOT has been awarded $1.1 million from the SMART Grants program to test the drone-in-a-box initiative, with the goal of enhancing disaster management and expediting emergency services.
