The government of Norway plans to introduce a temporary ban on establishing new Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining data centers to conserve energy.
The decision aims to redirect electricity to other industries and economic sectors in the national interest.
Norway's Minister for Digitalization and Public Administration, Karianne Tung, stated the Labour Party government's intention to limit cryptocurrency mining in the country.
The ban is attributed to the excessive electricity consumption by Bitcoin and crypto mining operations, which offer little benefit to the broader economy.
Cryptocurrency mining is considered power-intensive and generates few jobs and income for local communities.
The government plans to implement the temporary ban in the autumn of 2025.
The decision was reported by Bitcoin Magazine and authored by Oscar Zarraga Perez.
