A Norwegian man has filed a data protection complaint against OpenAI after its ChatGPT chatbot falsely claimed that he had murdered two of his children and been sentenced to prison.
The false information was generated by ChatGPT, an AI system that sometimes produces 'hallucinations' - fabricated data that appears highly detailed and plausible.
The complainant, Arve Hjalmar Holmen, stated that the claim was completely false, but he is concerned that some may believe it due to the inclusion of real information.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, declared that the complaint relates to an earlier version and mentioned that newer versions have enhanced accuracy due to online search capabilities.
