The Government of Karnataka has decided to amend the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, to increase the maximum working hours to 10 per day, up from nine.
Overtime hours will also be increased to 12 per day, with a limit of 144 hours over a three-month period.
Establishments with less than 10 workers will no longer be covered by the Act, exempting them from maintaining workforce records and formal compliances.
The state's labour department justifies the amendments, citing similar changes in other states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh.
Stakeholders, including trade unions, are concerned about compromising workers' rights and well-being with these changes.
There are debates on whether longer working hours will truly boost productivity and provide a competitive edge for the state.
