OMA-designed building expansion for the New Museum in New York City to be completed in Fall 2025 will double the gallery space for contemporary art.
The 60,000 square-foot addition, a collaboration with Cooper Robertson, aims to enhance accessibility and visitor flow through new elevators, an atrium stairway, and a welcoming entrance plaza.
The project includes new spaces for artist residencies and a home for the Museum's cultural incubator, NEW INC, to strengthen its role as a civic resource.
The OMA-designed expansion will complement the existing SANAA-designed building, emphasizing openness and fostering new cultural perspectives and production.
Featuring horizontally expansive galleries, the building will invite public engagement with its transparent elements in the central atrium and terraces.
The expansion will offer improved visitor experiences with a new atrium stairway, open-air entrance plaza for art installations, and a lobby including an expanded bookstore and restaurant.
Additional facilities will include artist studios, a forum, and space for NEW INC to support creative entrepreneurs, while the Sky Room on the seventh floor will double in size.
The inaugural exhibition, 'New Humans: Memories of the Future,' will explore humanity's evolving relationship with technology, showcasing works from over 150 artists and cultural figures.
Scheduled for completion in Fall 2025, the project will bring a new chapter to the New Museum NYC's legacy of groundbreaking exhibitions and unique visitor experiences.
