The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has approved a $212 million contract to upgrade its Automatic Train Control System from floppy disks to a modern system that uses Wi-Fi and cell signals.
The current floppy disk system has been in use since 1998 and is now outdated, prompting the need for updates.
Hitachi Rail will provide 20 years of support and install the new communications-based train control system.
The entire $700 million project, including the control system upgrade, is expected to be completed by 2033 to 2034.
