Open-Source Random Numbers

  • RAVA is an open-source hardware RNG based on avalanche breakdown method for generating true random numbers.
  • The device uses a pair of Zener diodes to apply high voltage in the reverse bias direction, causing an avalanche of electrons and generating random data.
  • The random noise is amplified over op amps and fed to an ATmega32U4 microcontroller, providing 136.0 Kbit/s of random data.
  • RAVA offers a truly random method, is accessible for monitoring and replacement, and is open-source in nature.
