OpenAI is acquiring io Products Inc., a consumer electronics startup led by former Apple Inc. Chief Design Officer Jony Ive, in a $6.5 billion all-stock deal.
The deal values io Products at $6.5 billion, with OpenAI paying $5 billion worth of shares for the remaining 77% stake. The acquisition is expected to close this summer.
Ive will assist OpenAI in developing AI-powered computers, leveraging his design expertise from his time at Apple. The transaction involves Ive's design studio, LoveFrom Inc., and its clients like Airbnb and Ferrari.
OpenAI and Ive are working on new consumer devices, including a pair of headphones, that are set to launch next year. The acquisition follows OpenAI's recent purchase of Windsurf, a developer tooling startup.
