OpenAI has made its biggest acquisition yet by purchasing the hardware startup, io, founded by Apple design guru Jony Ive for $6.4bn. The collaboration between OpenAI and io has been in the works for two years.
Jony Ive, known for his work on iconic Apple products, will not join OpenAI as an employee, but his company, LoveFrom, will take over design for all of OpenAI, including its software.
OpenAI has been expanding its reach into hardware, with plans to work more intimately with the io team in San Francisco. Caitlin Kalinowski, who led Meta's AR glasses initiative, has joined OpenAI to focus on robotics work and partnerships.
OpenAI's recent acquisitions include Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool, purchased for $3bn, and Rockset, a real-time analytics database acquired last summer for an undisclosed sum.
