OpenAI’s ‘Deep Research’ Aims to Impact Business Intelligence

  • OpenAI has launched a research assistant called Deep Research that uses AI to search for detailed information from the web. Deep Research can generate a detailed report on a topic in the time usually taken by a research analyst. The system is also capable of completing complicated tasks swiftly and efficiently, enabling users to assess potential business partners, keep up with technologies and monitor market trends. The offering is currently only available to pro users but will become available to Plus and Team users and then Enterprise clients. Sergio Oliveira sees the time-saving and reduced manual research requirements as the most significant benefits.
  • Deep Research frees up valuable time for users that need to offload and expedite complex, time-intensive web research with just one query. OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen remarked that Deep Research is a significant step closer to achieving artificial general intelligence. This is when machines and AI reaches human-level intelligence and can broadly apply that knowledge across various tasks. OpenAI claims the underlying AI model used to power Deep Research does not have any of the known biases commonly found in machine learning.
  • Deep Research is expected to streamline the way businesses conduct research by enabling them to quickly scan the internet and provide deep insights within a matter of minutes. Peter Morales noted that the agentic workflow is valuable and a natural fit for industry verticals. For example, in pharmaceuticals, Deep Research can now automate tasks that would have been performed manually to generate a report on drug interactions and usage data. DesignRush's Sergio Oliveira imagines businesses using Deep Research for market research or to evaluate potential business partners, while lowering expenses by decreasing manual research requirements.
  • The most significant benefit of Deep Research is its speed since it can generate detailed reports in just a matter of minutes. As an AI-powered market research assistant tool, the technology can troll the web, collect data and compile complete reports accurately. Colby Flood noted that the AI tool could eliminate the need for many expensive social listening tools, providing a complete out-of-the-box solution to businesses' market intelligence needs.
  • However, the tool is not without its challenges. OpenAI admits that there are instances when the AI can hallucinate or make incorrect inferences, as Deep Research sometimes struggles to distinguish authoritative information from rumours. Deep Research may also struggle to convey uncertainty accurately, creating overconfidence about its findings. Additionally, the quality of information obtained by Deep Research may decline if websites decide to block the AI agent because they are not receiving compensation.
