Silicon Motion has announced a new PCIe 6.0 SSD controller promising speeds of up to 28GB/s, nearly twice as fast as existing drives.
The new controller is currently targeted at the enterprise market and it may take at least five years before PCIe 6.0 SSDs become mainstream in consumer gaming hardware.
While the current PCIe 5.0 interface is being utilized, work is underway for next-gen PCIe 6.0 SSDs with significantly faster speeds.
The transition to PCIe 6.0 SSDs in the gaming market is expected, as cutting-edge storage technology often makes its way from enterprise to consumer segments.
