Italian luxury fashion house Prada showcased Kolhapuri chappals priced at ₹1.2 lakh at a recent Milan fashion show without giving credit to India or the artisans.
The designs were labeled as 'leather flat sandals' and no acknowledgment of the cultural significance of the traditional Indian Kolhapuri chappals was provided.
Kolhapuri chappals, handcrafted in Maharashtra, received a Geographical Indication tag in 2019, recognizing their origin in specific districts across Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Prada faced criticism on social media for cultural appropriation and lack of credit to Indian artisans, while some individuals like Shobhaa De suggested that the situation could be viewed as a form of indirect tribute or flattery.
