An industry group representing publishers has filed an antitrust complaint against Google in the European Union over its AI Overviews feature.
The complaint alleges that Google's AI Overviews feature scrapes web content from publishers without their consent, negatively impacting their relationship with readers, traffic, and revenue.
The group behind the complaint, including The Movement for an Open Web and UK nonprofit Foxglove Legal Community Interest Company, argue that Google does not provide a practical way for publishers to opt out of content scraping for AI Overviews.
EU regulators may also scrutinize Google's AI Mode and Deep Search features if concerns about AI Overviews are confirmed. The complaint has also been filed with the UK's antitrust regulator.
