The Python Software Foundation (PSF) has announced an update to the PSF Grants Program to sustainably match the needs of the Python community, balancing other Foundation programs.
In 2024, the program awarded around $600k, up from $215k in 2022 and roughly $400k in 2023.
As grant requests come in at record levels, the PSF acknowledges the challenge it faces.
To manage the Grants Program more effectively, the PSF presented guiding principles, developed from a board retreat, in November 2024.
Staff then used the principles to examine data from different grant scenarios, which the PSF Board used to consider the pros and cons of each change.
Updates to the Grants Work Group Charter have been approved, and changes to the program will take effect on March 1.
To focus on the impact on conferences and workshops, the PSF intends to support new or smaller events that require financial assistance over more established gatherings that can attract sponsorships.
The changes are tied to the Grants Program commitment to transparency and communication along with quarterly reviews.
The PSF is a smaller foundation and counts on its members, donors, and sponsors, along with agreed-upon goals to ensure the sustainability of its work.
A library of community resources will be created to address conference and workshop gaps, alongside supplementary PSF Grants Program Office Hours, a discussion thread on Discuss.python.org and email contact points for the Board and Staff of the PSF Grants program.
