The Railway Board has decided to engage its Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) through competitive bidding for the operation and maintenance of newly constructed sheds, depots, workshops, and rolling stock.
The decision was conveyed to the general managers of all 17 zones, empowering them to carry out a limited tendering process for engaging PSUs.
A committee of principal executive directors was formed to decide the modalities of awarding the work to PSUs after the zonal Railways reported challenges related to the operationalisation and maintenance of newly created assets.
The Board has laid down 29 conditions for maintenance in the basic model document, including the handing over of existing assets to PSUs, augmentation of infrastructure, and periodic safety audits.
