Rant: state of generative AI in code generation.

  • Code generation with Gen AI is not yet up to the mark. In the projects where we require highly precise complex logical reasoning, gen AI sometimes makes terrible mistakes that are time-consuming to debug! However, in visual projects like UI development or JavaScript-based animation, AI tools work well. There is an observation that some Shorthand strict algorithms work pretty well than natural languages.
  • AI-generated code makes mistakes, Claude 3.5 Sonnet is used along with a few additional comments to produce better results. Other tools like Cursor and Windsurf are in radar, but Copilot is preferred over them. Gen AI is on and off, yes it can be productive, but it still requires improvements.
  • The article enlists a few Shell code examples.
  • Experience with natural language prompts is not efficient.
  • AI code generation works well in visual projects such as UI development or JavaScript-based animation.
  • AI-generated code uses natural language, which may result in mistakes.
  • Shorthand algorithms prompts work well in generating code and outputs predictable results.
  • Developer community needs to share their experience in AI code generation. Better algorithms that work predictably with different AI models are still under investigation.
  • The author prefers to use GitHub Copilot for productivity and to see how developers have used AI more efficiently than Copilot.
  • Gen AI is sometimes terrible at precise logical reasoning, resulting in debugging errors that waste time.
