Redmond, Washington Police Department launches drones as first responders (DFR) program to protect public safety.
FAA granted permission to fly BVLOS missions, without the need of visual observers, to police in Redmond.
Redmond operates the only full-time DFR program in the state and was the second police agency on the West Coast to receive BVLOS waiver.
The DFR program utilizes technology to help assess structure fires, locate missing persons, clear the interior of buildings, document crime and crash scenes.
The department currently employs drones dispatched from two nests, one located in the city’s Municipal Campus and the second one in a city-owned facility.
The drones have thermal-imaging and visual cameras, which enable them to help officers locate and track fleeing suspects in thickly wooded areas.
The department will continue to use both BRINC and Skydio equipment throughout the current year.
The program has logged more than 500 missions and has assisted police officers with making a number of arrests.
Data collected through DFR program doesn’t infringe on the privacy of city residents and deleted if not related to crime
Redmond plans to expand DFR program to the next level and explore the possibility of regionalization.
