Redwire Corporation has received NASA's approval to advance with its "Mason" project focusing on developing advanced manufacturing technology for building infrastructure on the Moon and Mars.
The Mason initiative, part of a $12.9 million award from NASA, aims to prototype tools for constructing structures like berms, landing pads, and roads on extraterrestrial surfaces.
Mason will utilize regolith on the Moon and Mars to create sturdy, concrete-like materials, reducing reliance on Earth transport for resources and cutting down mission costs.
The project includes tools like BASE for grading surfaces, PACT for compacting regolith, and M3LT for sintering regolith into durable materials, designed to operate in harsh off-world conditions.
