UnitedHealth Group has 1,000 AI applications in production, used across insurance, health delivery, and pharmacy divisions.
The AI applications transcribe clinician visits, summarize data, process claims, control chatbots, and are used by 20,000 engineers to write software.
Half of the applications utilize generative AI, and the other half use a traditional version, according to Chief Digital and Technology Officer Sandeep Dadlani.
UnitedHealth's AI initiatives have faced legal challenges, including a lawsuit alleging the use of a flawed AI algorithm to deny claims, and debate continues on the effectiveness and reliability of AI in healthcare.
