Reports indicate a significant increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the internet, with organizations like the Internet Watch Foundation and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children raising alarms.
The Internet Watch Foundation has identified 1,286 AI-generated videos in 2025, a substantial rise from just two videos in 2024. Similarly, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received 485,000 reports of AI-generated CSAM in the first half of 2025, up from 67,000 in all of 2024.
AI advancements have made these illicit materials indistinguishable from real content, with forums praising their realism. The content is distributed through the dark web, posing challenges for law enforcement.
While efforts are being made to address the issue, challenges persist due to the evolving nature of AI and delayed legal responses. The Department of Justice views AI-generated CSAM as a serious threat, with rare arrests and convictions in cases involving such content.
