Rethinking Whether Coding Is Needed
- Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, predicts that AI will eliminate the need for people to program computers. However, his prediction doesn't mean coding skills won't be required, as seen with examples from bank tellers and paralegals where jobs increased. AI written code could make the mass production of software so easy that there could be more demand for coders. Medicine, law, and engineering professions will still rely on human-coded software. AI technology can produce confidently wrong answers such as hallucinations and produce worse code. It's recommended that those planning on selling software invest time and money to learn computer science basics.
- AI producing bad code indicates there is still a long way to go in terms of perfecting language models. This means that AI-generated code will still require improvement by developers Hence the need for developers who can code manually won't be eliminated completely.
- While AI has come a long way and can take over some programming tasks, we are not yet in a place where AI can take over all the programming jobs especially since developers still need to supervise the code produced by AI.
