Riot Games will allow top League of Legends and Valorant esports teams in select regions to be sponsored by gambling companies to tap into the lucrative sports betting market surrounding the games.
The policy shift will come with safeguards to prevent excessive gambling ads during tournaments and protect players and viewers from potential negative impacts of gambling.
Riot plans to implement vetting processes for betting companies, utilize a third-party data platform, and enforce internal integrity programs for teams to combat unethical behavior.
While Riot-controlled channels will remain free of gambling-related content, the partnership revenue will be reinvested into lower-tier esports teams and events to boost the industry post-pandemic.
