Rivian joins the hands-free highway driving party

  • Rivian is rolling out a software update for its vehicles, introducing a hands-free highway driving feature. The update allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on compatible highways. The feature covers 135,000 miles of roads in the US and Canada and is expected to expand in the future.
  • Rivian's Enhanced Highway Assist feature controls steering, acceleration, and braking to create a less stressful driving experience. The system requires drivers to keep their eyes on the road. If the driver's attention strays, the system will issue warnings before disengaging.
  • Rivian plans to introduce a hands-off, eyes-off feature in its driver-assist system next year. This Level 3 automation feature would allow drivers to not pay attention to the road in certain situations, such as low-speed stop-and-go traffic, but experts have raised safety concerns.
  • Rivian is also introducing a Rally drive mode for its dual-motor vehicles, which provides enhanced throttle response and steering on various terrains. Additionally, the company is offering an over-the-air performance update for a fee, unlocking more power and introducing new drive modes.
