Thirteen people have been arrested in Romania for phishing attacks on Britain's tax office, suspected of obtaining millions of pounds in tax payments.
The arrests were made in cooperation between HMRC and Romanian police, with individuals aged between 23 and 53 facing charges including computer fraud and money laundering.
A criminal gang stole £47 million through phishing tactics, accessing customer accounts and making false payments, prompting HMRC to launch investigations and make arrests.
The phishing incidents targeted individuals with legitimate-seeming emails to obtain sensitive information for fraudulent tax repayment claims, involving income tax, value added tax, and child benefit payments.
