Russia has launched a national registry to target illegal crypto miners in an effort to legalize and regulate the mining sector.
The registry, developed by the Ministry of Energy, Federal Tax Service, and Ministry of Digital Development, aims to identify and monitor large-scale energy consumption linked to unregistered mining.
While crypto mining was legalized in 2024, only a small percentage of operators have registered, with individual citizens allowed to mine within a monthly cap but required to report output and earnings to the tax authority.
Authorities in Russia are using tech-driven detection tools to crack down on illicit mining operations, as the government faces power shortages and strives to rein in the flourishing yet unregulated mining sector.
