Ryo Yamada's Zero Meter Above Sea Level 20000 is a site-specific timber installation at Summerhall Arts in Edinburgh, visualizing projected sea levels in the future due to climate change.
The installation is based on the current elevation of Summerhall, approximately 76 meters above sea level, projecting a future sea level rise of 0.5 meters globally over the next century.
Constructed over 33 days using precisely cut timber elements and non-woven fiber, the installation represents a speculative ocean surface at the gallery location in central Edinburgh 19,980 years from now.
The delicate yet stable timber frame forms a monolithic volume, evoking a subaqueous environment through architectural precision and light-filtering fiber, allowing visitors to visually experience the potential impacts of rising sea levels.
