Engineers at the University of Surrey have developed a new technique to enhance the safety and durability of nuclear fusion power plants.Through the PFIB-DIC imaging technique, researchers studied P91 steel welds in fusion reactors to identify stress-induced strength changes. At high temperatures in fusion plants, the steel can become brittle and lose over 30% of its strength due to welding-induced stress. This discovery will aid in improving materials testing, advancing reactor design, and accelerating the development of commercial fusion power plants.
