C+A – Coelacanth and Associates renovates KUBO-BLDG, a 50-year-old building in downtown Nagoya, Japan, with a seismic upgrade using asymmetric oval-shaped structural elements and a new concrete column-beam frame.
The renovation transforms the building into a safer, more expressive structure that harmonizes with its urban surroundings by highlighting the oval-shaped seismic elements integrated into the facade.
The project incorporates balconies for natural ventilation and airflow, addressing lessons from the pandemic, while refreshing common areas and retaining the existing structure to allow future tenants to customize their spaces.
With a total floor area of just over 350 square meters, C+A's retrofit demonstrates how seismic safety considerations can inspire creativity and functional design within the renovated building.
