The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the launch of the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU) to combat cyber-related fraud and protect retail investors from risks in emerging technologies.
CETU, headed by Laura D'Allaird, replaces the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit and focuses on fraud involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain technology, and crypto-related scams.
The unit will also address cyber threats such as hacking for nonpublic information, retail brokerage account takeovers, and fraudulent schemes using social media, the dark web, and fake websites.
The SEC's creation of CETU is part of their efforts to protect investors, support capital formation and market efficiency, and prevent the misuse of innovation to harm investors and undermine confidence in new technologies.
