The Senate Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas has urged for improved internet coverage and an operational offline 911 helpline in underserved regions of Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
During a recent meeting, chaired by Senator Agha Shahzaib Durrani, concerns were raised regarding poor connectivity, terrorist attacks, and the need for government intervention.
The committee discussed telecom services provided by the Universal Service Fund (USF), highlighted challenges such as security threats and bureaucratic hurdles, and emphasized the importance of enhancing communication infrastructure in remote areas.
In addition to focusing on service improvement projects, the committee called for transparency in cellular call rates, taxation details of telecom companies, and instructed the Ministry of IT to activate an offline 911 helpline and launch a nationwide emergency access awareness campaign.
