South Africa's competition regulator has called for Google and other tech companies to pay fines and implement changes to address media bias.
Google should pay 300 million to 500 million rand a year for three to five years to compensate local media firms.
The Commission argues that Google's algorithm has hindered the ability of news media to obtain and monetize digital traffic, contributing to the erosion of the media in South Africa.
Facebook, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) should also change their algorithms to promote vernacular and community media, according to the Commission's recommendations.
