The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the southwest monsoon's imminent arrival in Maharashtra based on current observations, notably a low-pressure area near the Konkan region.
The southwest monsoon reached Kerala earlier, its earliest arrival over the Indian mainland since 2009 when it arrived on May 23.
Dr. Shubhangi Bhute from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai mentioned the monsoon's steady progress towards Maharashtra due to favourable weather conditions.
IMD issued a red alert for coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg expecting 'very, very, extremely heavy rainfall', with an orange alert for Raigad district and closely monitoring Mumbai for any developments.
