Starbucks Workers United members at over 50 union locations have gone on strike to protest dress code changes announced in April and implemented recently.
The new dress code restricts employees to wearing solid black long and short-sleeved shirts, company-branded t-shirts, and black, khaki, or blue denim pants, which has been a significant change from the previous rules.
The union filed unfair labor practice charges stating that the new dress code deviated from the status quo and what was agreed upon at the bargaining table, affecting the Union's representational status.
Starbucks' communication about the dress code changes aligns with its focus on coffeehouse aesthetics since CEO Brian Niccol's leadership; the company stated that the update aims to provide a more consistent coffeehouse experience.
