A study has found that increased sales of electric vehicles (EVs) have led to a rise in CO2 emissions due to the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity for charging the EVs.
The environmental footprint of EVs heavily depends on the source of electricity used to charge them.
If EVs are charged using electricity from fossil fuel power plants, they may indirectly contribute to higher emissions when compared to modern gasoline or diesel vehicles.
The study suggests that the emissions balance will favor EVs when renewable electricity generation reaches approximately 48 percent, but currently, renewable energy accounts for only about 30 percent of global electricity generation.
