Krafton plans to delay the early access release of Subnautica 2 into 2026, just months before the $250 million bonus payment to developer Unknown Worlds was due.
The acquisition of Unknown Worlds by Krafton in 2021 included a bonus linked to revenue targets by the end of 2025, which now seem unlikely to be met due to the delay in Subnautica 2's release.
Unknown Worlds had intended to split the bonus among its staff, but the leadership team, including Subnautica designer Charlie Cleveland and CEO Ted Gill, were removed last week.
Newly appointed CEO Steve Papoutsis stated that Subnautica 2 is not ready for early access release and needs more content, although he denied that the delay was specifically to avoid bonus payments.
