Angela Sheehan, an artist and maker, is working on creating cuddly companion bots that are inspired by sci-fi robots such as Data from Star Trek, K-2SO from Rogue One, and Baymax from Big Hero 6.
Angela spoke at the 2023 Hackaday Supercon about her efforts to create companion bots, and she brought along her own creation, Nova. The plush critter has wings that can flap and eyes that can blink, which Angela created using her skills in sewing, 3D modelling, and 3D printing.
Through field testing at her library makerspace, Angela discovered that people had strong emotional reactions to Nova and wanted to pet her when they saw her. Angela explains how she designed Nova's face to make it feel more lifelike, which was a crucial part of making her a good companion.
Angela also covers techniques for making companion bots more cuddle-friendly and modularity, and offers advice for making builds more accessible. She describes the unintended happy accident of making Nova's servos sound like a purr, which people really enjoy.
Although companion bots are yet to have their killer app, people can start building their own robot companion with maker skills, enthusiasm, and the will to succeed.
