The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has urged the UK government to invest £15bn annually in tackling the country's growing ill-health crisis.
The thinktank stated that the worsening health conditions were impacting workforce supply, productivity, pay, public finances, and regional inequality.
The report suggested higher taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy food companies, free school meals for primary schoolchildren, and the creation of health and prosperity improvement zones.
The goal is to transition into a proactive healthcare system that focuses on improving health and adds 10 years to healthy life expectancy by 2055.
