Zoox has opened the first robotaxi production facility in Hayward, California, aiming to build over 10,000 fully autonomous vehicles annually for cities like Las Vegas.
The facility focuses on manufacturing purpose-built autonomous vehicles without a steering wheel or driver's seat, unlike competitors who retrofit existing cars.
It handles vehicle assembly, software integration, testing, and shipping, with some automation but most tasks are done manually.
Each vehicle undergoes rigorous quality and safety checks, including sensor calibration, water-tightness tests, and final inspections.
After testing, the robotaxis are validated through a short autonomous run on an outdoor track to ensure basic functions like navigation and braking.
The facility is expected to create hundreds of jobs, with Zoox already offering limited public rides in Las Vegas and planning to expand to San Francisco.
Zoox faces scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over incidents of braking unexpectedly, resulting in minor injuries.
The NHTSA is investigating Zoox's self-certification process for its robotaxi model, while Zoox remains committed to transparency and safety.
Acquired by Amazon in 2020 for $1.2 billion, Zoox continues testing with no set commercial release date for its robotaxi service.
