Incumbent telecom operators in India have introduced a dedicated '1600' number series for banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) companies to enhance the credibility of service calls.
TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti highlighted that the 1600 series will help consumers identify genuine transactional calls and differentiate them from promotional ones.
Some BFSI players like State Bank of India (SBI) Card have already started using the new numbering system, with TRAI planning to mandate its use for all service and transactional calls from large commercial entities in the BFSI sector.
TRAI has set up a Joint Committee of Regulators (JCoR) to oversee the implementation of the 1600 series and prevent misuse, with plans to extend it to government and financial sector entities for service calls.
