Tesla has applied for a permit with the California Public Utilities Commission to operate a ride-hail service in the state.
The permit, if approved, would be a first step for Tesla to eventually operate a robotaxi service.
The application is for a transportation charter-party carrier permit, which means Tesla owns the vehicles and employs drivers.
Although Tesla has not yet applied for a TNC permit or the CPUC's Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service program, this move suggests the company's preparation for a future driverless ride-hailing service.
